Update for October : Inter-Governmental Committee and Classification Bill

Updated: Oct 24, 2020

Greetings on behalf of the Musicians’ Union of Maldives

This morning, two of our founding members Mahran and Shiham held a meeting with the Minister, and Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Firstly, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Madam Yumna and Mr. Ikram for allowing their time to discuss the following:

Formation of the Inter-Governmental Committee

In addition to what we mentioned in our last post, we are now in the final stages of forming the committee to monitor foreign in-house entertainers performing in the Maldives. While waiting for the formalities to be completed, we have been asking and continue to ask you all to please do report any information you may have regarding foreign entertainers that are currently performing as in-house musicians in the Maldives. This will help us in being able to take swift action so as to hopefully ensure job security for local entertainers.

Classification Bill

The Union has received a draft of the Classification bill to be reviewed before being put forward to the parliament on 24th October 2020. We have started reviewing the bill and already have some concerns which we raised in today’s meeting. They have asked us to collect all the concerns being raised and forward it to them. Therefore, we would like to encourage all members to please set aside some time to read through it and make your comments on the document that we have shared here: Classification Bill Draft

This bill is very likely to have a direct impact on all creative individuals, so your opinion matters!

You will be hearing from us again very soon with some exciting news!

In the meantime, stay safe and well
